American Society for Clinical Pathology Joins Forces with Clinical Lab 2.0

American Society for Clinical Pathology Joins Forces with Clinical Lab 2.0 to Host Fourth Annual Clinical Lab 2.0 Workshop, Oct. 26-27

Clinical Lab 2.0 Movement Prepares Labs to Demonstrate Their Value and Lead as Part of Sweeping Changes in Health Care Reform

Chicago/Oct. 1, 2020— The COVID-19 pandemic has put the laboratory’s critical role in health care in the spotlight. The clinical laboratory is at the epicenter of revolutionary change sweeping across the entire healthcare field, and laboratories must be prepared to embrace these changes in order to survive and thrive.

That is the focus of the virtual 4th Annual Clinical Lab 2.0 Workshop that the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is co-sponsoring with Clinical Lab 2.0, Oct. 26-27. In light of this year’s pandemic, the workshop is being held online. An initiative of the Project Santa Fe Foundation (PSFF), Clinical Lab 2.0 is a business model that strives to ensure the clinical laboratory is prepared for the future, in light of the many changes taking place in health care.

“Health care is moving rapidly from a volume-based approach to a value-based approach, and these changes are coming into play very quickly because of technology and other innovations, along with changes in reimbursements, education, and the workforce shortfall,” said ASCP CEO E. Blair Holladay, PhD, MASCP, SCT(ASCP)CM.

“ASCP is very pleased to partner with Clinical Lab 2.0 on this upcoming workshop and on future initiatives,” he added. “The clinical laboratory needs to be prepared and Clinical Lab 2.0 has been at the forefront in helping our field to prepare.”

“The lab’s potential impact doesn’t end when we release a result; rather, that’s where it begins,” said Khosrow R. Shotorbani, MBA, MT(ASCP) President, Executive Director, Project Santa Fe Foundation Founder, and CEO, Lab 2.0 Strategic Services, LLC. “We look forward to the synergies that our collaboration with ASCP will generate going forward.”

The workshop will facilitate real-time, peer review dialogue on the Clinical Lab 2.0 model for COVID-19 response, its ability to create new norms to solve new problems, and its vital relationship to public and population health. The curriculum has been developed by Project Santa Fe Foundation, whose leaders hail from organizations that are driving the movement from test-volume to lab-value, including Northwell Health, Geisinger Health Systems, Henry Ford Health System, TriCore Reference Laboratories, Intermountain Healthcare, University of Vermont Medical Center, Mayo Clinical Laboratories, Kaiser Permanente and NorthShore University Health System.

“Pathologists and medical laboratory scientists should seek to play a major role in driving this revolution in healthcare,” said James Crawford, MD, PhD, Chair of the Board, PSFF, and Executive Director and Senior Vice President for Laboratory Services at Northwell Health. “ASCP is an organization that has played a significant leadership role in healthcare reform, addressing areas such as laboratory data interoperability with electronic health records, meeting meaningful use requirements for laboratory data, articulating the role of pathology in accountable care, including reducing unnecessary utilization of laboratory tests, and addressing the workforce shortage.”

For 2020, the Clinical Lab 2.0 Workshop $1500 registration fee will be waived for members of the lab community, making the event free of charge for laboratory institutions.
