Beyond the Bench: Redefining the Medical Laboratory Professional as a Diagnostic Health Consultant

May 7, 2026

This manuscript examines the gaps in the educational curriculum for medical laboratory science programs and their consequential impact on population health. It emphasizes the need for better defining the roles and responsibilities of medical laboratorians, from technologists to pathologists. Additionally, it introduces the concept of a mid-level provider, the diagnostic health consultant, who can bridge the missing gaps. The manuscript presents a detailed educational strategy aimed at equipping laboratory professionals with the necessary skills and knowledge to enhance patient outcomes through the effective utilization of advanced data analytics and risk stratification methodologies. By addressing these gaps and incorporating the diagnostic health consultant role, the manuscript aims to improve healthcare outcomes and revolutionize laboratory practices within the current healthcare landscape.
